I was finding that moment when I could laugh... But I swear! I couldn't laugh a single second throughout trailer. STORY: In this sequel to the 2014 original, top cop Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukerji) is up against a ruthless young serial killer, who also rapes young women before savagely murdering them. Will Shivani be able to nab him before he strikes again? REVIEW: In the very first scene, writer-director Gopi Puthran sets the tone of his film as a brutally chilling saga of a psycho killer on the loose. As the body count continues to mount in Rajasthans education hub Kota, the remorseless young killer Sunny (Vishal Jethwa) challenges Shivani to stop him if she can. Rani Mukerji once again steals the show with her measured and restrained act. She doesnt go over-the-top with theatrics but captures the nuances required to play a gritty top cop, dealing with heinous crimes, rape victims and a violent murderer. She does a fine balancing act between being powerful and vulnerable at the same time. The films antagonist Vishal Jethwa is a revelation and holds his own confidently against a powerhouse performer like Rani. He looks innocent, but delivers quite a chilling performance for a debutant. He gets the rustic Rajasthani accent right, just enough to add more menace. The films pace is relentless and adds to the thrill even as we see the villain constantly (and quite unbelievably) outsmarting the cops. The first and the second half are equally engaging, with no songs to interrupt the proceedings. Thankfully, the background score is subtle too. The films writing repeatedly hammers the point of gender inequality and bias. The director gives us glimpses into Sunnys troubled past, but also gives his character way too many smarts, making some of it seem unrealistic. What also doesnt help is him breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. The film tends to stereotype its male characters, portraying almost all of them as misogynistic and insensitive towards the plight of women. However, its the conviction in the performances and a gripping narrative that ensure theres never a dull moment in Mardaani 2. Yes, it is a brutal story thats sometimes hard to stomach, but it needs to be told. And none better than Rani in a khakee to lead the show.

Doch auf dem Nachhauseweg verlieren beide einander aus den Augen, ihre Rufe nach der jeweils anderen werden mit jedem Schritt lauter, panischer. Bevor das Abendessen beginnt, verschanzen sich die beiden Schwestern noch einmal in ihrem Schlafzimmer, in dem Guida ihrer Schwester von ersten sexuellen Erfahrungen mit ihrem griechischen Geliebten berichtet. Während das Essen vorbereitet wird, begleiten wir Eurídice am Piano. Klagt Mutter Ana ( Flávia Gusmão, Manô) zunächst noch über die mangelnde Hilfsbereitschaft ihrer Tochter, so bezaubern die Klänge zunehmend die gesamte Familie. Es ist ein so kurzer Moment, dass man ihn beinah verpasst; ein Zwinkern zum falschen Zeitpunkt und man übersieht die abgenutzten zentralen Klaviertasten, die Eurídice jahrelanges Klavierstudium auf dem Instrument dokumentieren. In ihnen manifestieren sich Disziplin und Opfer, vor allem aber die Leidenschaft zur Musik. Dieser winzige Moment drückt in seiner Leichtigkeit wie kaum ein anderer die Unmöglichkeit einer Familie aus, die so unbeschwert nicht mehr zusammenfinden wird.  Guida schafft es in der Folge, ihre Schwester zu überreden, die Familie mit ihrem Klavierspiel abzulenken, während sie, der Familie vortäuschend, krank im Bett zu liegen, Yorgus trifft — um 1 Uhr werde sie zurück sein, versichert sie noch Eurídice. Doch 1 Uhr kommt und geht, ohne dass Eurídice ihre Schwester wiedersieht — nur der zweite der goldenen Ohrringe der Großmutter, die sich Guida für den Abend mit Yorgus geliehen hatte, bleibt zurück. Stunde um Stunde und Tag für Tag wartet Eurídice auf die Rückkehr ihrer Schwester, bis eines Tages ein Brief die Familie Gusmão erreicht, geschrieben von einer Guida, die, blind vor Liebe, ein Schiff namens Liberty besteigt, das sie über den Atlantik nach Europa bringen soll. Von nun an steigern sich die Ereignisse in ihrer Tragik, und es ist schwer zu sagen, wem das bitterere Los zuteil wird. Hier Guida, die im Oktober 1951 mit einem nicht zu übersehenden Schwangerschaftsbauch nach Rio zurückkehrt und vom Vater nicht nur des Hauses, sondern auch der Familie verwiesen wird. Dort Mutter Ana, die in voller Ohnmacht mitansieht, wie ihr Mann Guida zum Abschied in unmissverständlicher Symbolik ein Geldbündel ins Dekollete drückt, nicht willens, einen Bastard-Enkel in der Familie zu akzeptieren. Und dann ist da Eurídice, die statt im Herzen Europas in einer vom Vater arrangierten Ehe landet und all ihre Sehnsüchte nach einer Karriere nach und nach davonfliegen sieht. Überboten wird all das nur noch dadurch, dass die Schwestern vom Vater im Glauben gelassen werden, dass sich die jeweils andere im Ausland befindet — Guida, die niemals aus Griechenland zurückgekehrt sei, und Eurídice, die in Wien ihren Musikstudien nachgehe. Bei einer solchen Ausgangssituation ist es ein Jammer, dass Karim Aïnouz nicht in die Vollen geht, um das Tragische tragisch zu inszenieren. Das beginnt bereits damit, dass die zentrale Beziehung beider Schwestern ein so wackeliges Fundament erhält. Dramaturgisch unklug werden uns beide Schwestern nur in zwei kurzen Szenen zu Beginn des Filmes in intimer Zweisamkeit gezeigt, die es schlicht nicht leisten können, die Besonderheit dieser niemals endenden Geschwisterliebe zu transportieren. Wenn Monate zu Jahren und Jahre zu Dekaden werden und wir aus dem Off die Stimmen Guidas und Eurídice hören, die es niemals aufgeben, einander Briefe zu schreiben, obwohl die Antworten auf ihre jeweiligen Nachrichten ausbleiben, so ist es an uns, die Szenen einer gemeinsamen Jugend zu imaginieren, die uns der Film vorenthält.  Beinahe ebenso tragisch wie das Szenario der unfreiwillig getrennten Lebenswege der Schwestern ist Aïnouz Entscheidung, erstmals in seiner Karriere digital zu drehen. Denn das Melodram, jenes Genre, das Aïnouz hier bedienen möchte, schreit geradezu nach Zelluloid. In dem Versuch, das Saudade-Motiv greifbar zu machen, verkennt der Film, dass sich jenes per definitionem in den Zwischenräumen positioniert, es das betrifft, was nicht artikulierbar ist. Heraus kommt dabei ein Bild, das sich an der Ästhetik des Analogen orientiert, in all seiner Glätte und Sauberkeit dessen materielle Qualität  jedoch nicht hervorrufen kann. Im Vergleich kommt man kaum umhin, das grobkörnige Kino eines Wong Kar-wai s, einem Meister des Melodram, herbeizusehnen.  Was auf ästhetischer Ebene bisweilen misslingt, gelingt Aïnouz auf auf beeindruckende Weise in der Beschreibung des Lokal- und Temporalkolorits. Rio de Janeiro ist hier weit mehr als eine bloße Kulisse, es ist eine Lebenswirklichkeit. Tatsächlich handelt es sich um einen Film, der, wenn im Zweifel, nicht über den Schmutz hinwegsieht, sondern ihn in den Mittelpunkt setzt. Klugerweise verliert sich Aïnouz nicht in einer romantisierenden Verklärung dieser vergangenen Ära. So hält die Kamera drauf, wenn sich Eurídice, auf einem Bidet sitzend, panisch den Samen des ungeliebten Ehemanns Antenor ( Gregório Duvivier, That's it) herauswischt, nachdem dieser, entgegen ihrer ausdrücklichen Bitte, in ihr gekommen war. Ein Kind, so stellt es sich für sie dar, wäre der letzte Sargnagel für ihren Traum von Wien, den Traum einer Karriere. Das Drehbuch erinnert uns daran, wie das Patriarchat der individuellen Freiheit nicht nur im Weg steht, sondern diese, noch einen Schritt weitergehend, überwacht. So zum Beispiel wenn Guida, bestrebt, ihre Schwester in Wien zu finden, die Flugreise verwehrt wird, weil ihr das Einverständnis des Vaters fehlt, um mit ihrem Sohn zu reisen. Ein Vater, der, wie sie es den Behörden schildert, nicht existiert. Wenn Eurídice von ihrem Mann - vollkommen ironiebefreit - aufgefordert wird, sie solle endlich ihre Schwester vergessen und an ihre Familie denken, deutet sich das an, was sich wenig später Bahn bricht, als Eurídice den ersten Preis bei einem Musikwettbewerb gewinnt. Warum sie das mit dem Spielen denn nicht lassen könne, wird sie da von ihrem Mann gefragt, dem es nicht in den Sinn kommt, sich ihres Erfolges zu erfreuen. “Wenn ich Klavier spiele, verschwinde ich”, entgegnet Eurídice. Es ist jener Satz, der wie kein zweiter eine Angst in ihrem Mann auslöst, die zwischen Neid und Eifersucht entlang verläuft. Neid auf eine Leidenschaft, die er niemals kennen wird, und Eifersucht auf das, was sie von ihm fernhält. Das Einstimmen Vater Gusmaos in das Unverständnis ihres Mannes ist stellvertretend dafür, wie Aïnouz seine antagonistisch angelegten männlichen Charaktere in all ihrer Brüchigkeit an einen Punkt führt, wo der Verlust klassischer Männlichkeit in einer Sinnkrise mündet. Durch das Herausstellen dieser Verletzlichkeit beweist der brasilianische Filmemacher ein grundlegendes Verständnis für seine Charaktere und eröffnet einen spannenden Diskurs entlang der Grenzen von Fürsorge und Kontrolle, Liebe und Macht. My biggest turndown with Invisible Life's biggest competition inside Brazil this year ( Bacurau' was the excess of metaphors to make it a smart work. some of which have absolutely no contibution to the story. Still, it was able to provoke a lot of emotional reactions, it's specially smart and meaningful to watch from a Brazilian perspective. Invisible Life is something different, it's universal, delicate and rough at the same time, and it's story has no need to explaining. we all know what it is about. Still, they explain (the only reason why it's not a 100% for me.
Carol Duarte and Julia Stockler are incredible. Also need to mention the short appearance from Brazil's greatest actress of all time, Academy Award nominee Fernanda Montenegro, not only for the name but mostly because, after 120 minutes of the movie, her performance was still able to reach out to the emotions you built for the characters in the past 2 hours.
Overall, absolutely beautiful. The film is a visual spectacle, but also a beautiful and touching story.

Hamster. I thought Jojo Rabbit was very entertaining and incredibly funny, but the pacing and plot were incredibly inconsistent. That was a pretty big punch in the gut for me. Im aufziehenden Nebel materialisiert sich der Filmtitel in knalligem Rot. Inspiriert von Martha Batalhas Roman "Die vielen Talente der Schwestern Gusmão" erzählt Karim Aïnouz ( Praia do Futuro. Zentralflughafen THF" die Geschichte zweier ungleicher Schwestern im Brasilien der Fünfzigerjahre. Beide sind voller Sehnsüchte: die zurückhaltende Eurídice (Carol Duarte) möchte Konzertpianistin werden, die aufmüpfig übermütige Guida (Julia Stockler) träumt von Liebe und Freiheit. Kein Platz für Wünsche Doch in der restriktiven Enge einer patriarchalen Gesellschaft ist kein Platz für solcherlei Wünsche. Guida wird - nachdem sie mit einem Matrosen nach Griechenland durchbrannte und Monate später schwanger und ohne Mann zurückkehrte - von ihrem Vater verstoßen. Immer wieder operiert sie auch mit partiellen Unschärfen - nicht zuletzt um väterliche Autoritäten und Abhängigkeiten ins Bild setzen: Bei einem Arztbesuch wird Eurídice eine bipolare Affektstörung attestiert. Durch Unschärfe verliert sie im Bildhintergrund ihre Umrisse und wird seltsam schemenhaft; wohingegen ihr Ehemann bildmächtig und klar konturiert den Vordergrund dominiert und mit dem Arzt die Krankheit seiner Ehefrau verhandelt - ohne dass Eurídice zu Wort käme. Im Video: Der Trailer zu "Die Sehnsucht der Schwestern Gusmão" Überhaupt zeigt der Film eine ganze Reihe von kleinen Unfällen und Abwesenheiten, von Zerwürfnissen und Misstönen: eine Hochzeitsnacht voller Unerfahrenheit und Ungeschicklichkeit, eine missglückte Reisepassbewilligung, die nur mit der Einwilligung des Vaters gestattet wird, einen elektronischen Score, der unterschwellig Dissonanzen produziert. Es wird nicht gespart mit dem Ausstellen subjektiven Unglücks und gesellschaftlicher Unerträglichkeiten, kaum findet man hier ungebrochene Figuren. Auch der Schluss ist zwiespältig: Im Sinne der Mechanik des Melodrams ist es schon too late, wieder ist die Anerkennung eine nachträgliche. Aber sie spendet trotzdem Trost und Tränen.
